An anchor for our human consciousness

An anchor for our human consciousness

Red Dance, by Sylvana Eid

Arleb by Nabad interviews visual and decorative artist Sylvana Eid about her passion for art following years of being held back by her professional career and family commitment.

Arleb by Nabad – What is the experience that has influenced your work the most, and what is your creative process like?

Sylvana EidDuring my art career, most of the women I met were in deep need of stillness and space for self-realization. That is something that has influenced my work a lot. I often relate to these women’s situations, and their experiences inspire me to document our encounters, portray them, and create a fictional world for them and myself.

Arleb by Nabad – What was the impact of the Beirut port explosions (August 4, 2020) on your work as an artist/creative enterprise?

Sylvana EidIn the aftermath of the Beirut port explosion, and the fear and the noise it created, I felt more than ever the need to continue my art work as a soothing form of therapy, for myself, for other women, and for people in general.

Arleb by Nabad – What are, according to you, the roles of arts and culture in social, economic, environmental or political change?

Sylvana EidIn a world of social, economic, environmental, or political instability, I believe that art can be an anchor for our human consciousness.

Arleb by Nabad – What are, according to you, the main challenges/obstacles facing artists/creative enterprises in Lebanon nowadays?

Sylvana EidThe main challenges are political, along with the economic instability and the absence of state support.
